Q: Which telephone systems do you program?
A: We focus strongly on the Asterisk Open Source platform. Our preferred OS is Debian Linux but have worked a lot with Gentoo also. Other distros such as CentOS should not be a problem either.
Q: What is Open Source?
A: Open Source is software that has its source code available to the public or consumer. Many Open Source projects have been built and maintained by hundreds/thousands of programmers/developers around the world. (See FSF.org and GNU.org for more information)
Q: What is VOIP and why is it so great?
A: VOIP can be thought of in 2 ways:
-1. VOIP can be telephone lines brought to your telephone system over your internet connection. You get the VOIP lines from an ITSP (Internet Telephone Service Provider), such as teliax, bandwidth.com, etc
-2. VOIP telephone systems do not have to use VOIP lines from telephone carriers. They can still use analog/pots lines. The phones connected to the telephone system are IP Phones, which allows phones to be placed anywhere in the world and be connected to the phone system for free.
Q: Why is Asterisk VOIP better then other VOIP telephone systems?
A: Asterisk is an Open Source PBX. This allows us to write custom programs for it, and integrate it with many applications. Their are no licensing and user fees. Upgrades are free.
Q: What is a PBX?
A: Private Branch eXchange. It is a small version of what a telephone carrier uses for businesses. (Basicly its like you have your own telephone company)
Q: What is an IP Phone?
A: An IP Phone works by talking back to the telephone server by IP over the internet. Asterisk IP phones generally use SIP and IAX protocols.
